In April 2016, a United States convoy carrying Samantha Power, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, driving through a village in Northern Cameroon accidentally kicked a 7-year old child who darted to the road while trying to view the convoy.
Nearly two months later, the Associated Press reported that the United States State Department will reimburse the child’s family for the accidental death, and here’s the compensation package:
$1,700 cash
Two cows
Hundreds of kilos of flour
Onions
Rice
Salt
Sugar
Soap
Oil.
In addition, the United States government will provide drinking water for the community by digging a well for the village.
“In addition to contributions from the Cameroonian government, the United Nations, and aid agencies, bringing the payment to a grand total of around $10,000.”
