True Servant Leadership

Some of the smartest people in the world are Africans and yet some of the worst leaders in the world are leading African nations. The fact is that most of the individuals leading African nations are actually not leaders; they are rulers. As a matter of fact, they are mostly “vision-less” rulers who are greedy, crooked, ethnic-minded and selfish, and in addition, some are extremists who use misunderstood religious beliefs to polarize ethnic groups within their countries in order to feed their selfish political agenda, to the detriment of their individual nations.

Now, it's not that Africa lacks true leaders; the problem is that the true leaders are not always given the opportunity to lead because the rulers (who are not leaders) have seized political power fueled by ill-gotten wealth, stolen from the treasures of their nations. Unfortunately, the destinies of African nations have been usurped by pedestrian thinking, ignorant and incompetent rulers who are blinded by roguery, power and ethnicity, and also religious extremism in most cases, while the true leaders are relegated to the background watching as mere spectators.

In general, many of the so-called African “leaders” rule without a vision for their nations, and they lack understanding of the meaning of true leadership. This is why every nation in Africa is “bleeding” and virtually stuck in a revolving cycle of stagnation or even reverting to worse states.

African countries have smart, talented and skilled citizens, but we lack systems to support and harness our talents and skills;and we lack enforced checks and balances within the systems to curb corruption and blatant stealing of public funds. We lack true leaders who are willing and ready to sacrifice what it takes to effect true change. When we refer to change, we don’t mean hypocritical and deceptive chants or slogans that politicians use to mesmerize simple-minded voters; we mean a “Nehemiah” leader who steps out in truth and honesty and who is ready to sacrifice all that he or she can, to inspire, and to lead his or her nation out of economic and political bondage, into a cohesive, technology-driven and successful nation that can compete with the rest of the global world.
