While visiting former military dictator, Rt. General Muhammadu Buhari (now President of Nigeria) in Abuja, Mr. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Co-Founder and CEO stated that “Nigerians are Talented”. Vanguard Nigeria reports, “Co-founder and the Chief Executive Officer of social networking website, Facebook, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg has said that Nigerians were highly gifted in the Information Communications Technologies, ICT.”
Mr. Zuckerberg, recognizes what most so-called Nigerian leaders have failed to see or simply don’t care about.
Vanguard Nigeria reported that “Zukerberg was in Nigeria earlier in the week but left Lagos for Kenya amidst speculations that there were no government officials to speak with him.”
When he visited Lagos earlier in the week before he left for Nairobi, Mr. Zuckerberg stated “I was highly impressed by the talent of the youths in the Co-creation Hub in Yaba. I was blown away by their talent and the level of energy that I saw,” he said.
Indeed, Mr. Zuckerberg's statement, “Nigerians are Talented”, is in fact so true. In addition, Nigerians are resilient and hardworking and tend to defy all negative odds they face within Nigeria and globally, to birth their entrepreneurial spirit.
It is rather unfortunate that Nigeria lacks true leaders. In fact so-called Nigerian leaders are too blinded by ethnicity, greed, obsession with political power, religious extremism (and covert or overt support of it), fetish and occult practices, persecution and/or murdering their political opponents, and plain selfishness, to give the youth in Nigeria genuine support by creating systems that work!
Mr. Zuckerberg flew all the way from the United States of America to Nigeria, to tell President Buhari in Abuja what he should have already known, that is, “Nigerians are talented” and have great entrepreneurial energy and spirit. If President Buhari already knew this, then what are his plans to fuel much needed tangible support (economic and infrastructure wise) into the system for young talented Nigerians? Can Nigerian politicians think and see beyond their parochial ethnic and religious blindness and extremism, or their onslaught of vendetta against their perceived political or religion-based enemies?
While we say kudos to Mr. Zuckerberg, we dare say Mr. President that unfortunately a photo-op with Mr. Zuckerberg is certainly not enough!
